“Non-constipating foods” for babies from Bonny

mcs_firstfood1

Bonny, a mom from Alexandria, asks these questions about feeding her little one.

We have started solid foods in the past month and I’m committed to making most of what Madelyn eats, but have run into a few frustrations/questions.
-Why doesn’t anyone tell you that the majority of the suggested “first foods” are constipating to little ones? (more…)

Friday night Pizza

DSC05579

Friday nights we often make a pizza together. I simply LOVE pizza and making it this way I can control the quality of the ingredients and it is super fun with my kids! I still buy my dough- always have a few in the freezer from Trader Joe’s, a jar of sauce in the pantry and some organic cheese from grass fed cows on hand. The rest is pure play! (more…)

Cloth Diapering by Stephanie Daniel

After having my second child, with one still in diapers, I became increasingly uncomfortable with the amount of diapers I was throwing into the dump everyday. I was extremely interested in cloth diapering- but it was SO OVERWHELMING! There were so many kinds and ways of doing it. There was so much on line about washing- all seeming so complicated. If I was not so committed, I would have not proceeded. But I did, and luckily I found Stephanie of Abby’s Lane (www.abbyslane.com). (more…)

Greens in a glass

009I am constantly changing and upgrading the way that I eat. I love to read what works for other people, and become excited to try them at my home. Raw food diets are something I have always been interested in, but have never has the real desire to do it. I am sure this will change one day- but for now, I just try to get more raw foods when I can. Green smoothies are the thing that has always peaked my interest in listening to their healing effects and energizing power in the morning. I have been feeling tired a lot as of late and needed to change something. I believe we all need to listen to our bodies, and when mine is telling me it is not in top form, I need to figure out a way to change it. (more…)

“Son won’t eat meat” from a mom in Alexandria

031

Dear Nourishingmoms,

One nutritional concern is my son does not like to eat meat. It is so hard to get him to eat ANY meat. I might fool him and blend it in some things but he really does not like the stuff…

Any suggestions or ways that I can help to balance out his diet? He is a high energy kid and I think this has a lot to do with his blood sugar going up and down…

Homemade Granola

img_4339

Granola is one of those things that is just super easy to make and it ends up being so much cheaper made at home then bought at the store. I try to by most of my organic grains, beans and seeds in bulk, which makes it even cheaper. And I can customize it to my family’s taste. (more…)
